At High Park Doodles, we are confident that our puppies will be wonderfully healthy and happy when we send them home. We want our clients to be as comfortable purchasing one of our puppies as we are selling them. For this reason, all of our puppies will go home with a 2 year genetic health guarantee.
Items Covered in the Genetic Health Guarantee
The 2 year genetic health guarantee provides warranty against debilitating congenital defects, defined as those present since birth and life threatening. This warranty does not include viral illnesses, infections, improper bites, stress related illness, hernias, luxating patellas, heat stroke, hypoglycemia, parasites (including Giardia or Coccidosis), cancer, seizures, gastrointestinal, endocrine disorders or anything considered non genetic. It also does not include any illness due to the ingestion of foreign objects, chemicals or physical injury.
Although breeders can not guarantee that their puppies will be free of any genetic health concerns typical to the breed, our puppy contract lays out your options should a rare condition manifest.
Why 2 years?
Some clients ask why the Genetic Health Guarantees only last for two years. The rationale behind this is that nearly all indicators of genetic disorders and abnormalities surface during the first 1-2 years of a puppy's life. So, having the 2 year time frame helps both the clients and the sellers in two ways:
The genetic health guarantee relieves the buyers of responsibility should any untreatable health conditions arise.
Genetic Testing on Parents
The first step in being able to confidently provide a health guarantee on our puppies, is receiving genetic testing on our puppy parents. All parents have passed the genetic testing which covers genetic abnormalities and diseases typical to the Labrador Retriever, Bernese Mountain Dog, Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier, and Poodle breeds. Being a mixed breed, Doodles may develop health conditions common to both of their breeds, especially if you aren’t cautious about whom you buy from.
Common health genetic conditions include:
We recommend asking your breeder to show evidence that both of a puppy’s parents have passed genetic testing. High Park Doodles prides ourselves in having this proof readily accessible to any clients who request to know more.
Health Exam on Puppies
In addition, we add another layer of security on our Puppy Health Guarantee. Prior to heading home, our puppies are examined by a licensed veterinarian and screened for common abnormalities such as hernias and cleft palates.
High Park Doodles stands behind the health and quality of the puppies we breed. If you have any questions regarding additional terms of our 2 year genetic health guarantee, or if you'd like to see a copy of our puppy contract in detail, please don’t hesitate to contact us today!
